Homeowners making energy-efficient improvements like replacing doors and windows, installing solar panels, or upgrading a hot water heater may qualify for home energy tax credits. Renters might also claim specific costs, but landlords cannot use these credits for rental properties. See Form 5695 instructions for more info.

Two tax credits available:

  1. Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit: Applies to existing homes (not new constructions). Covers:
    • Exterior doors, windows, skylights, insulation
    • Central air conditioners, water heaters, furnaces, boilers, heat pumps
    • Biomass stoves, boilers, and home energy audits
    • Credit: 2023-2032: 30% of costs, up to $1,200 annually (biomass stoves/boilers: $2,000 annually, no lifetime limit)
  2. Residential Clean Energy Credit: Applies to both existing and new homes. Covers:
    • Solar, wind, geothermal power generation, solar water heaters, fuel cells, battery storage
    • Credit: 2022-2032: 30% of costs (no annual/lifetime limit); 2033: 26%; 2034: 22%

Taxpayers should file Form 5695 with their tax return to claim these credits.
